That Sort of Fall

Late that year
he fell in love..
slowly at first,
unconsciously…
and, afterwards,
tentatively,
fearfully,
then
fast in the scree,
fingers bleeding,
feet useless
bindings broken,
a stumble and trip
on slings at the last edge
of the giant
metaphor
and free fall
beyond physical laws,
the orbits of heavenly bodies,
fields of force,
momentum
beyond the speed
of thought,
as particle and wave
to the simultaneous destination
of his death
and his beginning.

That sort of fall!
